George Eliot letters and portrait, 1867-1881.

The collection contains three letters from George Eliot, two from George Henry Lewes, one from John Walter Cross, and one portrait of Eliot. Eliot writes to Dr. Emil Lehmann, 6 November 1867, about his German translation of her book, Felix Holt; to Elizabeth Lehmann Benzon, 9 April 1874, about Lehmann's translation of Middlemarch; to Lehmann, 20 February [1875?], about selecting a translator for her new book, Daniel Deronda. George Henry Lewes writes to Lehmann, 12 January 1876, quoting a fee for translating Eliot's book, Daniel Deronda; and to Lehmann, 27 January 1876, mentioning several people who are interested in translating Daniel Deronda. John Walter Cross writes to Lehmann, 26 February 1881, rebuffing his overtures to translate Eliot's last work. Also, contains one cabinet card photograph of Eliot.
